Hans Adolph Buchdahl came to Australia as a refugee from Europe in the 1940's. He taught at the University of Tasmania's Physics Department, and during the Second World War he worked in optical munitions at the Waterworth Hobart Annexe.
After the war, Buchdahl was one of the few physicists to continue optical research; he specialised in the field of theoretical optics, focusing particularly on optical aberrations. Buchdahl later became Professor of Theoretical Physics at the Australian National University in Canberra.
