Buchdahl, Hans Adolph (1919 - )

Born: 7 September 1919
Hans Adolph Buchdahl was Professor of Theoretical Physics, Faculty of Science, Australian National University 1962-85. He was one of the few physicists who continued in theoretical optics after World War II. His work has been in the area of optical aberration coefficients and the equations of general relativity.

Born 7 September 1919. Educated Dominion College, London. Came to Australia in the 1940s, lecturer, then senior lecturer, then reader in theoretical physics, Physics Department, University of Tasmania 1942-62, Hobart Annexe during World War II, Professor of Theoretical Physics, Faculty of Science, Australian National University 1962-85, NY State Professor of Optics, University of Rochester 1967-68. ANU Fellow 1985-87. Nuffield Foundation Dominion Fellow 1951, Thomas Ranken Lyle Medal 1972, Overseas Fellow, Churchill College, Cambridge 1979, Fellow, Australian Academy of Science 1968, Walter Burfitt Medal 1980, CEK Mees Medal, Optical Society of America 1993.
