Born: 18 April 1868 Castlemaine, Victoria, Australia. Died: 30 July 1957. | |
John Alexander Ross worked for the Victorian Crown Solicitor's Office 1886-1930. After retirement he had a private legal practice until he was 84. He was also a keen ornithologist who, with Frank E. Howe, collected the type specimen of a subspecies of the Western Whipbird, Psophodes nigrogularis 1932. |

Born Castlemaine, Victoria, 18 April 1868. Died Malvern, Victoria, 30 July 1957. Educated Castlemaine High School and University of Melbourne (law). Crown Solicitor's Office 1886-1930, doing conveyancing for various Government departments for 30 years, with a number of promotions, the final one being to Examiner of Titles 1921-30; Commissioner of Titles and Curator of Estates of Deceased Persons in Victoria 1930-35; private legal practice, Melbourne 1935-52. Member, Royal Australasian Ornithologists Union from 1905, Curator of the RAOU Egg Collection for nearly 30 years, president 1924-25; member, Bird Observers' Club from 1905. Sometime member, Volunteer Militia Forces. Daily Telegraph Cup for best individual performance at rifle shooting, Bisley, England, 1898. |
