Stephen James (Steve) Wilson is a keen amateur ornithologist. He took out a banding licence in 1960 for his son who, at 15, was too young to get a licence. From 1961-82 he conducted field work every weekend with young volunteers in banding surveys of birds in various sites in the ACT, principally the Brindabellas, the Australian National Botanic Gardens and Lake George. |

Born Richmond, Victoria, 10 June 1912. OAM for his contribution to ornithological research, bird banding and the community. Educated St. Patrick's College, Ballarat. War service in Royal Australian Air Force; Department of the Navy 1946-71, retiring as head of the naval personnel branch. Instrumental in forming the Canberra Ornithologists Group and long-time committee member; now an Honorary Life Member. Wrote Birds of the ACT: Two Centuries of Change, published by the Canberra Ornithologists Group in 1999. |
