Ian Cecil R. Rowley worked for CSIRO Wildlife Survey Section (later CSIRO Division of Wildlife and Ecology) from about 1953 until his retirement. His work on the communal breeding of Australian birds has made him internationally famous. |

Born Edinburgh, Scotland, 6 February 1926. Educated Universities of Cambridge (1943-44) and Melbourne (BAgSc). Royal Naval Volunteer Reserve 1944-48; CSIRO Wildlife Survey Section ca 1953-69, working on rabbits and the Superb Fairy-wren; CSIRO Division of Wildlife and Ecology, Perth 1969-. Corresponding Fellow, American Ornithologists Union 1979; Fellow, Royal Australasian Ornithologists' Union 1989; Inaugural recipient, D.L. Serventy Medal, Royal Australasian Ornithologists' Union 1991. Australian representative, International Ornithological Committee 1974; Permanent Executive Committee, International Ornithological Congresses 1982. Has written two major books, Bird Life (first published 1975) and Behavioural Ecology of the Galah in the Wheatbelt of Western Australia (1990). |
