Medland, Lilian Marguerite (1880 - 1955)

Born: 29 May 1880  North Finchley, England.  Died: 16 December 1955  Queenscliffe, New South Wales, Australia.
Lilian Marguerite Medland trained and worked for many years as a nurse in England. Charles Stonham, a surgeon at Guy's Hospital where she did her training, published The Birds of the British Isles between 1906 and 1911, with her as illustrator. She later married Tom Iredale (q.v.) and did the illustrations for a number of his books.

Career Highlights
Nurse 1896-1923(?); produced 318 monochrome plates to illustrate Charles Stonham's five volumes of The Birds of the British Islands 1906-11; invited to illustrate a revised edition of William Yarrell's A History of British Birds 1911 (book never completed, but she did 248 paintings for it); painted 30 species of birds for the Australian Museum, which were issued as postcards in 1925; completed 53 plates depicting 883 Australian birds for Mathews (q.v.) 1930s; plates for Iredale's Birds of Paradise and Bower Birds (Melbourne, 1950), Birds of New Guinea (Melbourne, 1956) and his proposed book on Australian kingfishers. Her painting of the Providence Petrel Pterodroma solandri was used on a 1961 Norfolk Island stamp. Married Tom Iredale (q.v.) 8 June 1923.
