Littlejohns, Raymond Trewolla (1893 - 1961)

Born: 13 August 1893  Kyneton, Victoria, Australia.  Died: 22 January 1961.
Raymond Trewolla Littlejohns was an accountant and keen bird photographer. His most important ornithological work, conducted over more than 20 years was on the lyrebirds of Sherbrooke Forest, which he photographed and filmed. Later he photographed mammmals at night and made a film on the Mistletoe-bird, a copy of which was presented to the Queen during her visit to Australia in 1954.

Career Highlights
Born Kyneton, Victoria, 13 August 1893. Died Melbourne, 22 January 1961. Educated Scotch College, Melbourne. Labour Department, Victorian Public Service 1910-58, qualifying as an accountant during this time. A keen photographer, his early work was done in association with his friend, Stanley Lawrence, who was joint author of his first work, Birds of Our Bush; Photography for Nature Lovers (1920). In 1919 he married Stanley's sister, Doris, who became a devoted companion on most of his excursions. He made two broadcasts with the Australian Broadcasting Commission (1931 and 1933) of the songs of Sherbrooke lyrebirds, and some of this material was later used to produce gramophone records. He also wrote three books, The Magic Voice (1933), The Lyrebird; Australia's Wonder Songster (1938) and Lyrebirds Calling from Australia (1943). Member of the Council of the Royal Australasian Ornithologists' Union for almost 40 years, including serving as Assistant Editor of The Emu 1921-24 and President 1959-60.
