Condon, Herbert Thomas (1912 - 1978)

Born: 27 February 1912  Melbourne, Victoria, Australia.  Died: 12 January 1978.
Herbert Thomas Condon was Curator of Birds, in charge of birds and reptiles, at the South Australian Museum 1938-76. He made his mark as a taxonomist and by the help he gave younger people over many years. He was also talented as a bird illustrator, cartoonist and photographer.

Born Melbourne, 27 February 1912. Died 12 January 1978. Educated University of Adelaide. Cadet, South Australian Museum 1929-33; Assistant to Ornithologist 1933-35; Assistant in Zoology 1935-38; Curator of Birds, in charge of birds and reptiles 1938-76; communications, RAAF, during World War II. President, Royal Australasian Ornithologists' Union 1961-62 (first professional ornithologist to be president), Fellow 1973; Honorary Member, South Australian Ornithological Association 1964. Honorary Editor, South Australian Ornithologist 1953-64. Wrote A Field Guide to the Hawks of Australia (published by the Bird Observers' Club 1949) and, with Arnold McGill, A Field Guide to the Waders (published by the Bird Observers' Club 1952) and illustrated both of these publications. Convener, Royal Australasian Ornithologists Checklist Committee from the mid 1950s and worked on the new Australian Checklist as the sole taxonomist from the 1960s to 1975.
