Bäuerlen, William (1840 - 1917)

Explorer and Botanist
Born: 1840  Germany.  Died: 1917.
William Bäuerlen travelled with the New Guinea Exploration Expedition of 1885 under H.C. Everill during which the Strickland River was explored for the first time. He was later employed as Botanical Collector by the Technological Museum, Sydney 1890-1904.

Career Highlights
Born Germany, 1840 or 7 October 1845. Died 1917. Collected specimens of Australian plants for Baron Ferdinand von Mueller (q.v.) for many years; later collected specimens of plants for Joseph Henry Maiden (q.v.) around Braidwood and Tenterfield in New South Wales; went on the "Bonito" expedition to New Guinea under Captain Everill 1885, where he collected a large number of botanical specimens for von Mueller; botanical collector, Technological Museum, Sydney 1890-1904. Published "The Wild Flowers of New South Wales" with Gertrude Lovegrove 1891. Commemorated by the plant, Correa bauerlenii.
