Mack, George (1899 - 1963)

Museum director and Ornithologist
Born: 2 October 1899  Killearn, Scotland.  Died: 24 October 1963.
George Mack worked for the Queensland Museum 1945-63 and was director 1946-63. Previously he worked for the National Museum of Victoria from 1923.

Career Highlights
Born Killearn, Scotland, 2 October 1899. Died Brisbane, 24 October 1963. Educated University of Melbourne (BSc). War service, Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders 1914-19; migrated to Western Australia ca 1919; National Museum Melbourne 1923-45, ornithologist from 1935 and in charge of the fish collection during World War II; senior scientific assistant to the director of the Queensland Museum 1945, acting director 1946, director 1946-63. President, Royal Society of Queensland; president, Anthropological Society of Queensland; president, Queensland Naturalists' club; executive member, Great Barrier Reef Committee. Professional ornithologist and collector, who wrote a number of articles on taxonomy and believed that it was necessary to study bird skins for positive identification. Wrote Birds from Cape York Peninsula, Queensland (1953).
