| Edwin Cheel was Botanical Assistant at the National Herbarium, Sydney from 1908 until becoming Principal Assistant in 1913. In 1924 he was appointed Curator and between 1933-36 was both Botanist and Curator. |

Migrated as a farm-labourer to Mackay, Queensland, May 1892; worked in the cane-fields ca 1894-97; carpenter, Sydney ca 1894-97; gardener, Centennial Park 1897-1901; 'honorary charge' of lichens, National Herbarium, Sydney 1901; outdoor staff, Botanic Gardens 1902-05; in charge of lichens and fungi 1906-08; botanic assistant 1908-13; principal botanical assistant, in charge of the herbarium 1913-24; curator 1924-33; botanist and curator 1933-36. Bronze medal, Royal Society of New South Wales 1943. President, Naturalists' Society 1911-12, 1923-24; president, Linnean Society of New South Wales 1930; president, Horticultural Association 1929-31; president, Royal Society of New South Wales 1932. |
