| Spencer Smith-White was professor of botany at the University of Sydney 1963-74. He was a pioneer of the study of cell physiology in Australian plants. |

Field assistant, Griffith Research Station 1933, science master, Scotch College, Mitcham 1934, plant breeder, New South Wales Department of Agriculture 1935-36, research officer and botanist, Museum of Applied Science, Sydney 1937-47, Lecturer, then senior lecturer, then reader in Botany, University of Sydney 1948-63, professor of biology (genetics) 1963-74, Head, School of Biological Sciences 1966-67, honorary Associate, Universities of Sydney and New South Wales 1975-80. Fellow, Australian Academy of Science 1962, Clarke Medal, Royal Society of New South Wales 1968. President, Linnean Society of New South Wales 1958. |
