Bishop Harvey Goodwin fellowship, University of Manchester 1933-34; Groningen, the Netherlands 1935-36; temporary assistant lecturer, University of Manchester 1937-41, assistant lecturer 1941-44, lecturer 1944-47, senior lecturer 1947-49, reader 1949-52, professor (first personal chair in the history of the University) 1952-63; professor of mathematics, Institute of Advanced Studies, Australian National University 1963-68; professor of mathematics, Ohio State University, Columbus, Ohio 1968-72. Fellow, Royal Society 1948; Senior Berwick Prize, London Mathematical Society 1950; honorary member, Dutch Mathematical Society 1957; Fellow, Australian Academy of Science 1965; De Morgan Medal, London Mathematical Society 1971; Lyle Medal, Australian Academy of Science 1977; honorary member, Australian Mathematical Society 1986.
