Franklin, John (1786 - 1847)

Arctic explorer
Born: 16 April 1786  Spilsby, Lincolnshire, England.  Died: 11 June 1847  at sea.
(Sir) John Franklin was a well-known polar explorer when, in 1836, he was appointed Lieutenant-Governor of Van Diemen's Land. He was recalled in 1843 and continued his explorations meeting his death searching for the 'North-West Passage' in 1847.
