Temporary Closing of Countway Library Rare Books and Special Collections
FRANCIS A. COUNTWAY LIBRARY’S RARE BOOKS & SPECIAL COLLECTIONS DEPARTMENT TO
CLOSE FOR RENOVATIONS
The Francis A. Countway Library of Medicine is undergoing a major renovation.
This vital undertaking will significantly improve the Countway’s ability to
meet the informational needs of its users and to preserve its renowned
historical collections. The renovation will be completed in the year 2000.
The first phase of the renovation project is devoted primarily to the
construction of new space for the Countway’s Rare Books & Special Collections
department. Improvements will include a new reading room, staff offices,
processing and exhibit preparation areas, a reception area, a seminar room,
research rooms, and expanded exhibit and stack areas.
The Countway’s Rare Books & Special Collections department will be moving into
its newly renovated quarters beginning in mid-March 1999. THE DEPARTMENT WILL
BE CLOSED TO THE PUBLIC FOR THE DURATION OF THE MOVE, WHICH WILL LAST
APPROXIMATELY TWO MONTHS, FROM 15 MARCH TO 17 MAY 1999. Limited reference
service to offsite users will be available during the closing, as access to
the
collections permits. We will do everything we can to minimize the
inconvenience this may cause for those planning to consult the collections
during this time. Specific inquiries should be directed to Jack Eckert,
Reference Librarian, at (617) 432-6207 or jack_eckert@hms.harvard.edu.
