Charting successAustralia's history is the history of maps, of attempts to claim the continent by surveys and soundings. Maps impose order and give control, but maps also provide a framework for further discovery and achievement. By careful observation, by adventure and reflection, Australian scientists have filled in the blanks, dispelling such speculations as the inland sea, establishing both country's hazards and possibilities. In doing so, geologists found that their European models and concepts were inadequate - an even more fundamental remapping was required. |
