Born Albury, N.S.W., 21 June 1900; died Perth 27 June 1956. Education Melbourne University (B.Sc., Dip.Ed. 1923, M.Sc. 1925, D.Sc. 1930). Science teacher, Geelong College, Victoria, 1926. Research fellow in natural philosophy at Melbourne University 1926-35; Rockefeller Foundation Fellow, Cavendish Laboratory, Cambridge, 1927-28. Syme Prize 1931 (shared). Director of the Commonwealth X-ray & Radium Laboratory, 1935-56. President of the Australian Branch Institute of Physics 1948-49.
