Born Peterculter, Scotland, 12 December 1821; died Sydney 12 October 1885. Education, Marischal College, Aberdeen (M.A. 1843, M.D. 1844). Lecturer in chemistry and agriculture, Marischal College, 1847-52. Professor of chemistry and experimental physics, Sydney University, 1852-85.
