Meteorologist and Glaciologist |
Born: 16 October 1938 |
William Francis Budd has been Professor, Cooperative Research Centre for the Antarctic and Southern Ocean Environment, University of Tasmania since 1992. He has played a dominant role in international research on polar ice over the last three decades. Based on extensive practical experience in Antarctica, he has produced theories and experimental confirmation of the large-scale behaviour of ice, which he has used to study the interaction of ice sheets and climate. His models provide explanations for the initiation and passing of ice ages and simulate the response of Antarctica to future global warming. These models have been extensively used in international assessments of possible climate change. Budd was a Vice-President of SCAR (Scientific Committee on Antarctic Research) and Convenor of its Group of Specialists on Sea Ice. |
