Sutherland, Grant Robert (1945 - )

Born: 2 June 1945  Bairnsdale, Victoria, Australia
Grant Robert Sutherland has been Director, Department of Cytogenetics and Molecular Genetics, Women's and Adelaide Children's Hospital since 1975. He developed methods to allow the reliable observation of fragile sites on chromosomes. These studies culminated in the recognition of fragile X syndrome as the most common familial form of mental retardation.

Julian Wells Lecture and medal, Australian Genome Conference Board 1996; Fellow, Royal Society 1996; Fellow, Australian Academy of Science 1997; Australia Prize for Molecular Genetics 1998; Burnet Medal, Australian Academy of Science 2001. President, Human Genetics Society of Australasia 1989-91; President, Human Genome Organisation (HUGO) 1996-97.
