Roger Ian Tanner was P.N. Russell Professor of Mechanical Engineering, University of Sydney from 1975. His research interests are applied mechanics, rheology and computation.

Russell Professor of Mechanical Engineering, University of Sydney 1975- , Pro Vice-Chancellor (Research) 1994-97. King George VI Memorial Fellowship for one year study in USA 1956-57; Edgeworth David Medal 1967; Fellow, Australian Academy of Technological Sciences and Engineering 1976; Fellow, Australian Academy of Science 1979; Australian Society of Rheology Medallion 1993 (first award).
