Bell, Arthur Frank (1899 - 1958)

Arthur Frank Bell was under-secretary, Queensland Department of Agriculture and Stock 1947-58. He had previously been director of the Bureau of Sugar Experiment Stations.

Educated University of Queensland (BSc 1925), University of California (MSc 1926) and Imperial College, University of London (post-graduate diploma of membership 1927). Junior assistant, Queensland Department of Agriculture and Stock 1916-17; AIF 1917-18; Manchester College of Technology 1919; Department of Agriculture (later Agriculture and Stock) 1916-17, 1920-48, sugar research travelling scholarship 1924-28, plant pathologist, Bureau of Sugar Experiment Stations 1928-35, Assistant Director 1935-43, Director 1943-47, Assistant Under-Secretary (Technical) 1945-47, Under-Secretary 1947-58. Chairman, Milk Board, Chairman, United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization state Committee, chairman, CSIRO State committee, chairman, International Committee on Sugar Cane Diseases. President, Queensland Branch, Australian Institute of Agricultural Science 1939-40, president, Queensland Society for Sugar Cane Technology 1941-46, president, Australian Institute of Agriculural Science 1948. Australian Medal of Agricultural Science 1954, Farrer Memorial Medal 1956. Commemorated by the A.F. Bell memorial medal for agricultural science at the University of Queensland, awarded annually since 1959 by the Queensland branch of the Australian Institute of Agricultural Science.
