William John M. (Greg) Tegart had a varied career, which included Manager of BHP Melbourne Research Laboratories 1968-78, secretary of the Department of Science and Technology 1981-84 and of the Department of Science 1984-87, and secretary of the Australian Science and Technology Council 1987-93. He was educated at the Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology, University of Melbourne and University of Sheffield (BSc, MSc, PhD).
