Canavan, Frank (1909 - 1995)

 
Geologist
Born: 13 October 1909.  Died: 13 August 1995.
Frank Canavan graduated with a Bachelor of Science (BSc) from the University of Melbourne and worked for the Victorian Geological Survey for a year. He then joined BHP where he remained for most of his working life. During World War II Canavan was seconded to the Department of Supply's Mineral Resources Branch and from 1945 to 1948 was a member of the Department of Post-War Reconstruction Mineral Industry Advisory Panel, the forerunner of the BMR/AGSO. Canavan was also a foundation member and first Vice-Chairman of the Geological Society of Australia's Victorian division (1953), its Chairman in 1954 and President of the Federal body from 1967 to 1968.
