Arthur William Turner was the Officer-in-Charge of the Animal Health Research Laboratory, CSIR/O Division of Animal Health and Nutrition (later Production), Parkville 1936-54, he was then Assistant Chief of the Division until 1960. The work he and his collaborators undertook on Contagious Bovine Pleuropneumonia (CBPP) established confidence in the complement fixation test for diagnosis and identified the value of vaccination and its occasional shortcomings. The work was the basis of a national eradication campaign leading to Australia being declared officially free of CBPP in 1973. |

Born Carlton, Victoria, 17 August 1900. Died Melbourne, 20 December 1989. OBE 1938. Educated University of Melbourne (BVSc 1923, DVSc 1930). Walter & Eliza Hall Fellow, Veterinary School, University of Melbourne 1924; Rockefeller Foundation Fellow, Institut Pasteur, Paris 1926-27; Institute of Animal Pathology, Cambridge 1927-28; CSIR Veterinary Research Institute 1928-32, head of Oonoomba laboratory, Townsville (which was on loan from Queensland Department of Agriculture and Stock) 1932-36, Chief Bacteriologist, CSIR/O Division of Animal Health and Officer-in-Charge, Animal Health Research Laboratory 1936-54, becoming in addition Assistant Chief of the Division to 1954, when he stepped down as Officer-in-Charge of the Laboratory but remained Assistant Chief of the Division until 1960. Syme Prize, University of Melbourne 1932; Fellow, Australian Academy of Science 1954; Gilruth Prize, Australian Veterinary Assocaition 1958; Life Member, Australian Veterinary Association; Foundation Life Fellow, Australian College of Veterinary Scientists.
