Bailey, John (1) (1800 - 1864)

Born: 1800  London, England.  Died: 1864  Adelaide, South Australia, Australia.
John Bailey was appointed South Australian Government Botanist and Curator of the Botanic Garden in 1839. In 1841 he established a farm and a nursery business in partnership with his children, one of them being F.M. Bailey.

Career Highlights
Born London, 1800. Died Adelaide 1864. Trained in Loddige's Nursery. Migrated to South Australia 1838; government botanist and curator of proposed botanic garden from March 1839; retrenched by Governor Grey ca 1841; farmer; established private nursery in Hackney, near Adelaide, with two sons, one being Frederick Manson Bailey (q.v.).
