Charles William MacCarthy undertook medical studies at the Catholic University School of Medicine in Dublin, but in 1870 temporarily halted his studies to serve in the Franco-Prussian War. Upon his return, MacCarthy worked as a resident clinical associate at Dublin’s Mater Misericordiae Hospital. This was followed by short stints in Manchester, England and in Ireland (Fethard and Clomnel). He then enrolled at the University of Brussels and graduated with a Doctor of Medicine in 1884. Later that year, MacCarthy migrated to Sydney, Australia where he set up a practice in Elizabeth St and became an honorary Physician and Surgeon at St Vincent’s Hospital. |
