Dudley Robert W. Best was a foundation member and secretary of the Field Naturalists' Club of Victoria, of which he was made an honorary life member in 1923. Many of his beetles were obtained by breeding the beetle larvae in special cages at home. |

Born Needham Market, Suffolk, England, 1 March 1844. Died Melbourne, 10 June 1928. Joined the firm of Joske Bros, general importers and wine and spirit merchants; in 1886 the firm became known as Joske, Best & Co., with a trade in colonial and imported wines, spirits and ales; retired as senior partner in 1916, but for many years continued to visit the city two or three times a week. Foundation member and honorary secretary, Field Naturalists' Club of Victoria 1880, serving on the committee in various positions for 16 years. Particularly interested in beetles; three species were named after him, and his collection was bequeathed to the National Museum of Victoria. |
