Cobbett, William (1763 - 1835) |

| William Cobbett was a key political activist in England during the 1800’s. In 1802 he produced the Political Register - a weekly newspaper which he used to drum up support for political reform and criticise the government when he saw fit. To cut costs and combat tax and price increases the Political Register was converted into a pamphlet in 1815. This saw circulation rise from a few thousand to 40, 000 per week and it was now being read by the working class. To flee persecution and possible arrest, William Cobbet moved to America. During his two year exile, the Political Register was kept in circulation by Cobbett’s friends. Once back in England he rejoined the radical movement and began a tour around Britain on Horseback. These events are published as a book Rural Rides (1830). This and many of his other published work are kept at the National Library of Australia. |
