Carne, Joseph Edmund (1855 - 1922)

Born: 12 February 1855  Urana, New South Wales, Australia.  Died: 23 July 1922  Chatswood, New South Wales, Australia.
Joseph Edmund Carne was New South Wales Assistant Government Geologist 1902-16 and then Government Geologist 1916-19. Earlier he was a member of the Geological Survey of New South Wales from 1879 and curator of the Mining and Geological Museum, Sydney 1883-1892.

Career Highlights
Born Urana, New South Wales, 12 February 1855. Died Sydney, 23 July 1922. Educated Sydney Technical College (geology). Station-hand, outback New South Wales and Queensland; Geological Survey of New South Wales 1879-83; curator, Mining and Geological Museum 1883-92; geological surveyor on the field staff 1892-94; Prospecting Board 1894-1902; assistant government geologist 1902-16; government geologist 1916-19. Clarke Medal 1920. Father of Alan McArthur and Walter Mervyn Carne (qq.v.) The Carne River in Papua is named in his honour.
