Shellshear, Walter (1856 - 1939)

Born: 17 September 1856  London, England.  Died: 11 November 1939  Greenwich, New South Wales, Australia.
Walter Shellshear was an engineer in the New South Wales Railways Department 1882-1921. He was involved with many important works, including an additional generating plant for the Ultimo Tramway Power House, station yard re-arrangement for the new Sydney station 1906, the renewal of the steel in two miles of timber viaducts across the Murrumbidgee flats at Wagga Wagga, and the new Nepean bridge at Penrith 1907.

Born London, 17 September 1856. Died Sydney, 11 November 1939. Educated King's College, London (mathematics) and University of Glasgow (certificate of proficiencey in engineering science 1877-78). Engineering works of Robert Napier and Son, Glasgow; work for George Buckley, London, on the design of bridges and the supply of materials and survey for the Indian government railways; arrived New South Wales 1879; draftsman, Department of Works 1880-82; draftsman, Railways Department 1882-86, district engineer in charge of the metropolitan district 1886-1903; inspecting engineer 1903-05, deputy engineer-in-chief 1905-12, consulting and inspecting engineer in London 1912-21, supervising all materials ordered for New South Wales government works. President, Engineering Association of New South Wales 1885-86.
