Born Great Oakley, Essex, England, 14 January 1819; died London, England, 27 January 1895. Education Cambridge University (B.A. 1842, M.A. 1845). Barrister, U.K., 1846-62. Chief justice of Queensland 1863-79. President of the Queensland Philosophy Society 1863-78. President of the London Mathematical Society 1886-88. F.R.S. 1865. Knighted 1869.
