Born: 6 July 1910  Romsey, Victoria, Australia
(Sir) John Laurence Knott was a public servant for many years. His positions included Secretary, Department of Defence Production 1957-58 and Department of Supply 1959-65, and Director-General, Posts and Telegraphs 1968-71. He then went into the private sector as a company director. Knott was appointed Commander of the Order of the British Empire (CBE).

Private secretary to Minister for Trade Treaties 1935-38; Seretary, Australian Delegation Eastern Group, Supply Council New Delhi 1940; Executive Officer, Secondary Industry Commission 1943-45; Director, Defence Production Planning Branch, Department of Supply 1950-52; Member, Australian Defence Mission United States 1957; secretary, Department of Defence Production 1957-58; Secretary, Department of Supply 1959-65; Deputy High Commissioner London 1966-68; Director-General, Posts and Telegraphs 1968-71; Director, Equity Trustees Company 1972-89; chairman of a number of companies. President, Victorian Branch, Australian Institute of Management 1975; President, Victorian Branch, English Speaking Union 1973-86.
