Louis Hope established the sugar industry in Queensland, and set up a mill in Ormiston with his first sugar being produced in 1864. He also supplied plants for the experiments of John Buhot. After a milling dispute in 1875 Hope dismantled the mill and sold it, returning to England in 1882. Ormiston House is now owned by the Carmelite Sisters and on the front lawn is a memorial to Hope, erected by the sugar interests in Queensland. |
