Hope, Louis (1817 - 1894)

Grazier and Sugar pioneer
Born: 29 October 1817.  Died: 15 August 1894  Geneva, Switzerland.
Louis Hope established the sugar industry in Queensland, and set up a mill in Ormiston with his first sugar being produced in 1864. He also supplied plants for the experiments of John Buhot. After a milling dispute in 1875 Hope dismantled the mill and sold it, returning to England in 1882. Ormiston House is now owned by the Carmelite Sisters and on the front lawn is a memorial to Hope, erected by the sugar interests in Queensland.

1848Moved to Moreton Bay (later known as Queensland)
1853Bought land at Ormiston and Kilcoy Station (joint ownership)
1863Sole owner of Kilcoy Station
1865 - Built a sugar mill and established the colony's sugar industry at Ormiston
1867Took up extra land at Hope Island, near the mouth of the Coomera River and at Kilcoy
1870Installed Pruche Aubry as a manager on Ormiston
1875Sold the Ormiston mill
1882Returned to England
