Clifford Stuart Christian was Chief of the Division of Land Research, CSIRO 1957-60 and member of the CSIRO Executive 1960-72. He and a colleague, Alan Stewart (qv), proposed a land system survey involving the then revolutionary concept of using air photographs as an analogue model of the land resource to identify broad scale recurring patterns of land units, and then determining their characteristics by stereoscopic examination and field traverse sampling. |

Research on plant genetics and plant breeding, CSIRO 1930-43; deputy Senior Agrostologist 1943-46; Officer in charge, North Australian Regional Survey from its inauguration in 1946 to 1950; Officer in charge, Land Research and Regional Survey Section 1950-57; Chief, Division of Land Research, CSIRO 1957-60; Member CSIRO Executive 1960-72; consultant ecologist 1972-1977. Commonwealth Liaison Officer for Arid Zone Research 1954; Adviser (Ecology and Land Use) to Ranger Uranium Environment Inquiry 1975-77. President, Australian Instutute of Agricultural Research 1961. Farrer Memorial Medal 1969; Foundation Fellow, Australian Academy of Technological Sciences and Engineering 1975. | |
